Seeking Sponsors... Help Make Park Avenue Shine!

On Beautiful Historic Park Avenue

Saturday May 13, 2017

Merchants and residents of Park Avenue are teaming up to present a Festival on our beautiful, tree lined avenue on Saturday May 13, 2017. Park Avenue is a beautiful part of our community that we are bringing back to its glory days, and we want to share it with EVERYONE!  It is a natural extension of our downtown area that we prefer to think of as "UPTOWN".  There is plenty of parking available in the 7 blocks of the festival area, or you can simply park your car at one end of the avenue and "Walk the Avenue". There are several big parking lots that lend themselves to the to a festival atmosphere, including Park Place Baptist Church, and the Tower of Strength Church (where you will also find free parking), as well as a wonderfully eclectic assortment of businesses and restaurants who plan to offer sidewalk sales, sidewalk cafes, and entertainment.

There will be vendors offering crafts, jewelry, tie dye, metal and wood crafts, an organic dog wash, bicycle repair, organic fruits and vegetables and more. When you get hungry you will find food vendors, and restaurants, with smoked ribs, tacos, pizza, ice cream, hamburgers, hop dogs, and candy from every area of the world and MORE! Entertainment is varied from month to month but will include live MUSIC, live POTTERY demonstrations, fire dancers, jugglers, children's arts and crafts and more.

Our Goal is to create a fun-filled event that will help show the world that it is safe to walk our streets, to shop, dine and even to live in our neighborhoods. To do this we need lots of activity... Yard sales, sidewalk sales, sidewalk cafe's, craft vendors, entertainment...  whatever we can think of to create activity. This is an advertised event once a month throughout the summer. We hope that we can count on you to help make this successful.

And a special award was presented to Louis from Next Level BBQ. If you have read our Facebook page you know that SummerFest was created to bring positive attention to our beautiful Park Avenue. This makes it obvious that those of us on Park Avenue have a lot to gain from all of the hard work that goes in to creating this Festival. Louis tho, does not own a business or property on Park nor does he live anywhere near it. Yet Louis has been a part of our committee since our very first Festival in June of 2014. And I have come to believe that the smells from his BBQ Smoker wafting up and down Park Avenue, is what is enticing all of Hot Springs to come and check out SummerFest Uptown!! Thanks Louis!

Homegrown Music and Poetry Contest 2015 Judges

Head Judge, Bud Kenny, a Performance poet who has studied acting with Sir John Gielgud, been a popular rock-and-roll DJ, and toured the country with his mule, Della, performing slam poetry, will be another one of the judges for the contest tomorrow. Kenny is a familiar name to Arkansas poetry aficionados, having started the Wednesday Night Poetry Readings in Hot Springs in 1989. In 1997, he founded the Arkansas Grand Slam, which for 15 years offered the world’s biggest prize for an individual performance poet. Kenny also opened The Poet’s Loft, a coffee house and performance venue in the heart of the Hot Springs art district.
Kenny once took a three-and-a-half year walking tour of America with a pack pony and dog, trekking from eastern Pennsylvania to Oregon, down the Pacific coast to San Francisco (where he was arrested for having a horse on the Golden Gate Bridge), then east to Hot Springs.
In 2001, Kenny and his wife, Patricia, accompanied by a pack mule named Della, walked from Hot Springs to Maine, with Della pulling a cart with a solar panel on top to power stage lights and a public address system for the poetry shows Kenny performed along the way. In 2006, the threesome hit the road again, traveling New England producing performance poetry shows.
Kenny has published five books of poetry. For more information, go to Kenny’s website: www.usonfoot.com

Judge Niles Ellis; a member of the Code Blue Classic Rock Band since 2003 is a veteran rocker and Hot Springs Native, graduated from Hot Springs High School and the National park College, has worked at Mid America Science Museum since 1979 where he is the Director of Design. AND he recently married Rita Ewing Hoskins Ellis. heart emoticon

Judge Chana Caylor. A singer, songwriter and pianist, as well as a yoga instructor; she started singing in church at 8 years old and has has played numerous musical venues locally. She has also fronted several different bands in this area as well. Chana covers a vast variety of musical styles with her heart felt interpretation of many classic, modern and original songs she performs. Chana was a top 10 finalist in the Song of Arkansas contest and performed her entry, "Come Home to Arkansas" live on Good Morning Arkansas. You can google that and watch the video on Youtube, by the way. Chana is also host along with her husband, Randy, of The Local Show Music Menagerie at Whittington Place, monthly.

Judge Max Sestili, singer, songwriter, guitarist, drummer and Hot Springs resident; Max started on his father’s drum kit as a toddler, formed his first band as a guitarist in middle school, and has been playing ever since. Many bands, stages and states later he performs locally with tribute bands Kinisi Komodo (Led Zeppelin) and The Solar Federation (Rush), and the original trio Bizarro Buddha. Quicksand changes in mode and tempo and razor blazing lyrics about life’s experiences set the unique tone for his rock, folk, grunge and progressive fused style.
